Palmetto Bay is a burgeoning community of more than 25,000 residents, just west of Biscayne Bay and just to south of The Village of Pinecrest.

The Village of Palmetto Bay was incorporated on September 10, 2002 and has become a neighborhood which now competes with Pinecrest for home buyers looking for good-sized backyards and a community feel.  Recently the Village  installed new street signs, completed several beautification projects and created new  park facilities…  affectionately dubbing it the “Village of Parks”.   Among the largest of the parks is Coral Reef Park… with tennis, sand volleyball, canals, fields, playground areas, barbeque facilities, afterschool  activities, club and team sports, and  ongoing community events and festivals.

Aside from the parks, Palmetto Bay has numerous bike paths, hiking trails and open spaces…  abundant vegetation and natural hammocks … drawing  it’s residents outside… to enjoy the out-of-doors.

One fairly recent addition to the community is the  new “dog park” … where  owners mingle… and dogs can swim ! (No, that’s not a typo!). ..  The dog park  has it’s own lake with a fountain in the center ( a novelty!)…There’s a gazebo too.  (Take towels!)    Perrine Wayside Park,  at  SW 164th Street and US1,  is a 3-acre dog park with separate play areas for  dogs according to their sizes… separating large and small dogs

* On a side note, another place you can take your dogs to swim is a 15 minute drive to the north… all along the causeway  as you’re headed  out to Key Biscayne.  It’s ocean there, but because  it’s a causeway, it’s not considered a beach, so dogs are allowed there.  You can fish, sailboard, barbeque, swim there as well.

Back to Palmetto Bay:  The village now has a number of “A” rated public schools along with several fine private schools, and as a result Palmetto Bay has become more and more desirable over the past decade . Not all that long ago, it was known more for it’s orchards (avocado and mango)… but those have dwindled somewhat, on account of the development and construction… and space converted to parks and related infrastructure.

Palmetto Bay begins at  SW 136th Street and extends to the south  down as far as SW 184th Street. From the east, it begins at the water’s edge on Biscayne Bay and extends all the way west,  to South Dixie Highway (US1) . .. There’s  new construction as well as resale living options. with single family homes generally running from $250,000 to a million plus, depending on size and location… with a handful of  walled and gated-communities as options as well.
