Wanting to create backyard privacy on a dime? We have a quick solution.
After weeding/cleaning out an areca palm hedge, we needed an instant fix to address the lack of privacy. Landscaping plants and hedges grow really fast in South Florida, but there’s something to be said for an “instant fix”.
Residential windscreens (or privacy screening) come in pre-made sizing, or you can custom order them. Typically the screening comes in 50 foot long sections …. in heights of 3, 4 and 5 1/2 feet high or taller (pre-made). They’re often used for tennis courts.
After researching online, and checking out the screening that others in Miami installed, we went with the word-of-mouth recommendation of friends/neighbors : Highland Products (because we liked the way theirs looked).
In a nutshell: The heaviest windscreens give you 96% blockage … come with grommets … and cost around $150 per section, for the 50′ x 5 1/2′ screens. They are easy to attach to existing fencing, using plastic cable ties. It took me about 20 minutes to install one 50 foot section behind existing shrubbery.
There are “temporary versions” of privacy screening available (offering about 80% blockage). But I didn’t like how that looked installed. That kind is intended more for construction sites… and has a less “finished” look. They are slightly less expensive – costing less than $100 per section.
